In Guatemala where only 52% of the population attends school beyond 6th grade, we provide a pre-K through 11th grade educational opportunity that is unique and affordable. Hero School students develop the skills needed to foster a democratic society such as problem-solving, and collaboration. Our curriculum integrates UNESCO standards for Education for Sustainable Development, STEM methodology, and green building projects to empower students to be change makers - what we call heroes. With the community as their classroom, these heroes are building local solutions to global challenges.

Over 500 community members have benefited from student-led projects to construct water tanks, energy-efficient stoves, compost latrines, retaining walls, classrooms, and off-grid homes. These projects provide tangible solutions to the serious challenges of respiratory and digestive illness, lack of water access, poor sanitation, deforestation, and soil erosion. Our ideas are inspiring others and we have seen tire retaining walls springing up throughout Guatemala as Hero School innovations are being replicated.

Long Way Home has transformed more than 1,000 tons of rubbish into vital poverty-alleviating infrastructure - schools, homes, health clinics, stoves, water cisterns, and more. Over 100,000 used tires and tens of thousands of plastic bottles were removed from rivers and streets, spanning three continents. The marvel that is the Hero School campus serves as the training grounds for people from all over the world to learn about the theory and practice of green building. Come build with us!
