(EN) This past year, I had the amazing opportunity to work as an intern for Long Way Home. I began Interning for the nonprofit in September and finished in July, working through the highs and lows of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the bulk of my work was with the grant-writing team, I also had the experience to assist the nonprofit in other areas as well. I am extremely grateful for the behind-the-scenes experience in the nonprofit world; although I have volunteered for many organizations, this was my first time understanding how they run. The knowledge is invaluable and will definitely be useful for my future career.
I interned for Long Way Home as a grant-writing intern and had the opportunity to assist in the writing and editing processes. I was assigned unique tasks and attended weekly meetings to talk with the other interns and our supervisors to assess our productivity for assignments. Since my internship coincided with the expansion of Hero School, I had the opportunity to witness the enthusiasm and planning that goes into witnessing an idea develop from inception to fruition. I was also fortunate enough to help with various nonprofit development tasks. These responsibilities included researching grants on various databases, such as GrantStation and Foundation Directory. This taught me the importance of ensuring fit between a grant and an organization, as many funding bodies have very specific criteria for applicants. Not paying careful attention can mean the difference between a successful application and a wasted effort.
Each week I had opportunities to work with different aspects of the grant-writing and -research process, a skill that is sure to come in handy in the future! Teamwork is another important skill I learned during my time as an intern for Long Way Home.
As a writer, I am accustomed to working on projects solo, but this experience taught me the necessity of accepting feedback and criticism from others. It also taught me to appreciate the significance of collaboration and to feel proud when you can recognize your individual contributions and the importance they hold to the finished product.
Overall, Long Way Home was the perfect way for me to keep busy during my gap year between undergrad and grad school—a way for me to exercise my writing and research skills during the pandemic. I will be furthering my education with a doctoral degree in educational psychology and will be forever grateful to Long Way Home for helping me grow as a writer and a future academic.
(ES) El año pasado, tuve la increíble oportunidad de trabajar como pasante en Long Way Home. Comencé la pasantía en Septiembre y termine en Julio, trabajando en los altibajos
de la pandemia de Covid-19. Aunque la mayor parte de mi trabajo fue con el equipo de redacción de subvenciones, también tuve la oportunidad de ayudar en otras áreas también. Estoy muy agradecida por la experiencia detrás de escena en el mundo de ONGs; aunque he sido voluntaria para muchas organizaciones, esta fue la primera vez que comprendí cómo funcionan. El conocimiento es invaluable y definitivamente será útil para mi futura carrera.
Hice una pasantía para Long Way Home como pasante de redacción de subvenciones y tuve la oportunidad de ayudar en el proceso de redacción y edición. Me asignaron tareas únicas y logré asistir a reuniones semanales para hablar con los otros pasantes y nuestros supervisores para evaluar nuestra productividad con nuestras asignaciones.
La pasantía coincidió con la expansión de Hero School, tuve la oportunidad de presenciar el entusiasmo y planificación que implica presenciar el desarrollo de una idea desde su inicio hasta su realización. También tuve la suerte de ayudar con varias tareas; incluyendo la investigación de subvenciones en varias bases de datos, como GrantStation y el directorio de la fundación. Esto me enseñó la importancia de asegurar el ajuste entre una subvención y una organización, ya que muchos organismos de financiación tienen criterios muy específicos para los solicitantes. Si uno no presta atención puede significar la diferencia entre una aplicación exitosa y un esfuerzo en vano.
Cada semana tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con diferentes aspectos de la redacción de subvenciones y la investigación, una habilidad que seguramente será útil en el futuro. El trabajo en equipo es otra habilidad importante que aprendí durante mi tiempo como pasante en Long Way Home.
Como escritora, estoy acostumbrada a trabajar en proyectos en solitario, pero esta experiencia me enseñó la necesidad de aceptar comentarios y críticas de los demás. También me enseñó a apreciar la importancia de la colaboración y sentirse orgulloso cuando puede reconocer a su contribuciones y la importancia que tienen para el producto terminado.
En general, Long Way Home fue la manera perfecta para mantenerme ocupada durante mi año sabático entre pregrado y posgrado. Una forma de ejercitar mis habilidades de escritura e investigación durante la pandemia. Continuaré mi educación con un doctorado en psicología educativa y siempre estaré agradecida con Long Way Home por ayudarme a crecer como escritora y futuro académica.
