How the Hero School is Changing Lives in Guatemala—And How You Can Help

Our World Needs Heroes

That’s why we started Hero School in a small town in the highlands of Guatemala. On our campus, teachers, students, builders, and international volunteers take heroic action for the environment and the well-being of the community members.

Hero School was awarded the 2023 UNESCO Prize for Education for Sustainable Development. Long Way Home was chosen for its project "Hero School," which provides affordable and high-quality education to marginalized communities while integrating sustainable values into lesson plans and curriculum. These values include climate change mitigation, improved access to quality education and clean water, food security, gender equality, and human rights.

What Makes Hero School Unique?

Hero School isn't just an institution—it’s a transformative learning experience where students actively participate in building a better future.

  • A Holistic Curriculum: Hero School follows the standard Guatemalan education curriculum while also integrating sustainability, community-based problem solving, and leadership development. Students learn how to analyze and address the unique challenges their community faces, preparing them to become the next generation of changemakers.

  • Democratic Problem Solving: Students engage in discussions and decision-making processes that mirror democratic governance, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills that empower them to enact positive change beyond the classroom.

  • Real-World Application: The education at Hero School is not confined to books and classrooms. Every year, students apply their knowledge through student-led infrastructure projects, which directly impact the well-being of their community. These include:

    • Smoke-Reducing Stoves: Reducing firewood use and improving indoor air quality.

    • Drinking Water Cisterns: Storing up to 1,100 liters to provide clean water during dry seasons.

    • Safe Waste Disposal Latrines: Made with eco-bricks and glass bottles to improve sanitation.

    • Landslide-Preventing Tire Retaining Walls: Protecting homes and schools from erosion.

    • Earthquake-Resistant Housing: Using sustainable materials for long-term safety.

These projects not only enhance the community's well-being but also equip students with life skills that empower them for the future.
