The Power of Service: How a Week at Long Way Home Changed My Perspective

At Long Way Home, service is more than just volunteering—it’s an opportunity to be part of something bigger, to contribute to a movement that transforms communities through sustainable building and education. For those looking to make an impact, bringing a service group to Long Way Home is a meaningful way to experience hands-on learning, teamwork, and community-driven change.

A Life-Changing Experience in Comalapa

When Tamara Donnenfeld led a service group from Temple Beth Am to Long Way Home in 2022, she didn’t know what to expect. The group traveled to Comalapa, Guatemala, with the intent to help, but what they discovered was a community that redefined resilience and innovation.

“I saw how a small, underprivileged community did what some deem ‘impossible’ as they worked to make the worst parts of their society the best parts.”

The first impression of the school was awe-inspiring. Instead of a run-down building, the group was met with a vibrant, creative space—constructed entirely from upcycled materials like tires and bottles. What had once been waste was now an architectural masterpiece, reflecting the ingenuity and sustainability at the heart of Long Way Home.

The Impact of Hands-On Work

One of the most powerful moments for the Beth Am service group was the first day of construction. Many volunteers had never worked in construction before, but as they quickly learned, the experience was about more than just building—it was about teamwork, perseverance, and impact.

“I looked around in awe, realizing the power of working as a community. Without our team of 18 volunteers, the small group of Long Way Home workers would have taken three days to complete what we did in just three hours.”

Service groups play a crucial role in accelerating the construction process, allowing Long Way Home to expand its educational facilities faster and support more students. Every shovel of sand, every bucket of concrete, every effort contributed to the foundation of a new science lab—a space that will provide future generations of students with hands-on learning opportunities.

Connecting with the Students

While the physical labor was fulfilling, the true magic of the experience happened when the volunteers connected with the students. Despite language barriers, games were played, laughter was shared, and bonds were formed. Seeing the children’s joy, curiosity, and excitement for learning was a testament to how education transforms lives.

“Before this school existed, Comalapa did not have a reliable source of education for children, and they had a severe trash problem. Long Way Home mitigates both of these issues—turning their biggest problem (trash) into a powerful tool for social justice.”
