Green building Academy

green building academy

LWH and Ecohab.org are teaming up to transform tires, cans, and plastic bottles filled with trash into classrooms for a village near San Juan Comalapa in Guatemala. 30-year green building veteran Phil Basehart will lead instruction.

The Green Building Academy (GBA) is Long Way Home’s unique 4-week intensive course designed for individuals who wish to dive deep into green-building and design topics, as taught by expert instructors.

GBA participants will be learning, building, and living alongside staff from all over the world as well as our experienced local team. Students will live in a green-designed home and will help keep a zero-waste household, an experience that can create life-changing habits.

The program takes place in April and November each year at our site in San Juan Comalapa, a rural town in Guatemala’s highlands. Participants who join the Academy will contribute to our efforts to make healthy and resilient structures accessible to low-resourced and climate-stressed communities.

Long Way Home Partners with EcoHab!

ECOHAB nurtures both people and place.

Ecohab constructs community centers, schools, and homes in partnership with paid local labor and the generous contribution of donated foreign labor. This collaborative approach benefits communities while fostering a sense of unity between locals and international volunteers.

During the GBA we work through many concepts relevant to eco building and sustainability principles. The first week participants will learn about earthen materials in different environments, the second week we will focus on how to design stable structures, the third week will be all about water systems including cleaning and disposing of water, and the last week we will look at off grid and energy systems.

Roberto tells us about his eco-house and the impact of the Green Building Academy.
